Ultralearners are ordinary people who can master difficult skills with extraordinary speed. As a result, they achieve tremendous personal success and cultivate a serious professional advantage. But how exactly do they pull it off? In Ultralearning (2019), Scott H. Young analyzes the aggressive, self-directed learning strategies of some of the world’s most successful ultralearners and breaks them down into techniques and strategies that anyone can implement.

About the author

Scott H. Young is a writer, programmer and entrepreneur with a passion for self-mastery and career development. He’s spent years studying the lives and work of ultralearners, uncovering their incredible learning strategies and distilling them into easy-to-apply principles designed to optimize learning for everyone. But Young hasn’t just studied the ultralearners, he is one. Through the principles of ultralearning, he’s taught himself multivariate calculus to a university level and become proficient in Mandarin Chinese, among other languages.

Word of the Day:

  • Journey Orchestration Engine - software designed to analyze customer data in order to improve the customer journey.

Metric of the Day:

These are three core web performance metrics, often referred to as Core Web Vitals, that measure different aspects of a webpage's user experience. Here's a clear definition of each:

  • Largest Contentful Paint (LCP):

LCP measures the time it takes for the largest visible content element (e.g., an image, video, or block of text) to fully render on the screen from the moment the page starts loading. It’s a key indicator of perceived loading speed. A good LCP score is 2.5 seconds or less, according to Google’s guidelines. Slow LCP can frustrate users waiting for the main content to appear.

  • First Input Delay (FID):

FID measures the time between a user’s first interaction with a page (e.g., clicking a button, tapping a link) and the moment the browser begins processing that action. It reflects a page’s interactivity and responsiveness. A good FID is 100 milliseconds or less. High FID values often occur when the browser is busy with other tasks (like executing JavaScript), leaving users feeling the page is sluggish.

  • Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS):

CLS quantifies how much a page’s layout unexpectedly shifts during loading—like when ads, images, or content load late and push elements around. It’s calculated as the sum of all individual layout shift scores (impact fraction × distance fraction) for unexpected movements. A good CLS score is 0.1 or less. High CLS can annoy users, causing misclicks or difficulty reading.

These metrics are critical for optimizing user experience and even influence search engine rankings, as they reflect how real users perceive a website’s performance. Let me know if you’d like deeper technical details or examples!
